6th April 1896 - After a break of 1500 years, the first Olympics of the modern era was held in Athens, Greece.

1st April 1918 - Royal Air force was founded. This year there are lots of events being planned to celebrate their centenary anniversary.
2nd April 1805 - Fairy tale author Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark. He created 168 fairy tales for children including the classics The Princess and the Pea, The Snow Queen and The Nightingale.
6th April 1483 - Renaissance artist Raphael (1483-1520) was born in Urbino, Italy. He created some of the world's greatest masterpieces including 300 pictures with a Madonna theme. He died on his 37th birthday in Rome.
12th April 1981 - The first space shuttle flight occurred with the
launching of Columbia with astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen aboard. Columbia spent 54 hours in space, making 36 orbits, then landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
16th April 1953 - The Queen launches the Royal Yacht Britannia.
15th April 1912 - In the icy waters off Newfoundland, the luxury liner Titanic with 2,224 persons on board sank at 2:27 a.m. after striking an iceberg just before midnight.
23rd April 1564 -
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born at Stratford-on-Avon, England. Renowned as the most influential writer in the English language, he created 36
plays and 154 sonnets, including Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice.
24th April 1990 - Space Shuttle Discovery launched the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit.
27th April 1994 - Nelson Mandela voted as South Africa President.
